In November of 2020, when the days were getting darker, colder, and the holidays were changed by the pandemic, six year old, bully-mix Layla needed an angel. As a member of a full household, including young children, Layla had difficulty walking and was in chronic pain due to a large growth on her back hind leg.
Knowing that she needed help but not having the money, Layla’s story was posted on Facebook and was quickly seen and shared with members of our organization. One of our volunteers contacted the owner's sister and discussions began about how to get Layla back to the energetic and loving family member she wanted so desperately to be again. Due to the pandemic however, for many organizations conventional fundraising was not an option. The Angels however, got creative, and got to work. After only a short time, we were able to find a willing and talented veterinarian to do the operation.

It was the hot and sticky days August 2020 and, he being the elusive independent gentle-cat that he is, evaded capture for a number of trying days. Knowing it was for his own good, one of our volunteers stayed on his tail and eventually, was able to wrangle him. He did not like losing his freedom and was scared at first, but Simon warmed up quickly and found he liked having some humans around.

Layla was finally going to be able to run and play again. After going into heat, she would go on to have the surgery in January 2021. A very successful one at that. She was also spayed and the growth was tested for cancer, fortunately it was benign. At the time of this writing, Layla is back to her old self and loving life with her family. This story highlights our ability to quickly get involved and have a positive outcome and impact. Our volunteers have helped grow our reputation so we are able to do what is most important to us, help the animals and community of West Warwick.
After getting him to a veterinarian the abscess that was so prominent and painful, was reduced and eliminated with antibiotics. He was also neutered and discovered to have Feline Aids, which is unfortunate, but usually does not impact the quality of the animals life. It does however mean, that Simon would have to be the only cat once adopted. Most likely just the way he’d like it to be. Since he was fairly well known in the neighborhood, the Angels were able to find an ideal home and he is currently living his best life with his new family here.

Our friend Simon is a handsome orange and white wanderer who was abandoned in the Angels very own backyard. He had made it on his own, with the help of some caring neighbors who would leave food, for a number of years. It wasn’t known definitively he was without a permanent home, only suspected, until one of the caring neighbors spotted an abnormality on Simon’s mouth and contacted the Angels.
